Fluoride Varnish

Fluoride varnish is a topical treatment added to the surface of teeth. The medical professionals at Salinas Pediatric Medical Group use a diminutive brush to apply the fluoride varnish. The fluoride varnish sets at the point of contacting saliva. The purpose of adding fluoride varnish is to stop new cavities from developing and also prevent tooth decay that has commenced. Lean on our team for the application of fluoride varnish and it will provide protection for upwards of several months. Fluoride varnish is suitable for infants and children. Kids should receive their first fluoride varnish at the time of the initial tooth eruption.

The fluoride varnish application process is quicker than most expect, taking about two minutes or less. Gauze is used to keep the teeth clean and dry prior to the application of the fluoride varnish. The varnish creates a sticky layer on the teeth that hardens soon thereafter, entering the enamel of the teeth and ultimately leading to hardening, the slowing of tooth decay and the prevention of cavities.

Fluoride varnish is completely safe for all people including babies from the moment at which their first tooth emerges and beyond. There is no reason to worry about your child swallowing fluoride varnish as small amounts are painted on the teeth. Ideally, the fluoride varnish will be reapplied three more times throughout the year for a total of four applications.
